LinuxCon 2009 Call For Participation
All submissions must be received before midnight 04/15/09 PST.

The Linux Foundation invites our members, core developers, Linux IT professionals, corporate end users, senior executives, industry experts, community leaders, students, media and anyone else with an interest in Linux to participate in the newest Linux conference in North America, LinuxCon. This isn’t a top-down, for profit conference controlled by a commercial entity. This is for community, by community. It’s a big tent and we want all you inside.

LinuxCon will provide an unmatched collaboration and education space for all matters Linux. We will bring together all of the best technical talent and the decision makers and industry experts who are involved in the Linux community. With a wide range of speakers and attendees, LinuxCon offers a unique conference experience that encourages collaboration, progress and interaction. We invite you to share your ideas and experiences with the Linux community by submitting proposals for presentations, tutorials, birds of a feather sessions, panels, lightning sessions and workgroups.

There will be three different categories for submissions: Developer (kernel, core development, software engineering), Operations (systems administration and management, systems architecture, Linux migration and deployment) and Business (open source governance, enterprise, ecosystem). Each of these groups plays a key role in the Linux community and we want to make sure that they are represented at LinuxCon.

Proposal Guidelines

Tips For Preparing a Successful Proposal

  • "Commercial free": we're all technical people so keep the marketing collateral at the door
  • Identify your audience: there are going to be a lot of smart people in the room so keep that in mind when preparing your proposal
  • Expertise required: who is your target audience, are they beginners, geeks, CEOs?
  • Why would people want to attend: is your topic discussing a critical project? Are you at a crossroads and need community input?
  • Keep it real: we want to hear about real-world examples, tools that our participants can apply immediately and projects that will positively impact the Linux platform
  • Watch the clock: you only have 45 minutes, so keep the scope of your proposal specific enough for you to be able to discuss it in that timeframe
  • Keep your title simple: we appreciate amusing titles as much as the next person but it makes it easier for people to know what you are talking about

Preparing Materials for English-Speaking Audience

The Linux Foundation is dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux by supporting the world-wide community. Which is why we encourage submissions from those community members for whom English is a second language. We recognize that a language barrier might prevent people from submitting their proposals to LinuxCon so we will be providing assistance with English as a second language issues during preparation of submissions for any individual who requires help. Make your reservation online here.

When contacting these hotels to make your reservation, please ask for the Linux Foundation group rate. The cut-off for accepting hotel reservations into the room block with the negotiated rate is August 20, 2009 or until the block is filled (whichever comes first). Applicable state and local taxes currently are 12.5% (subject to change without notice). A credit card is required to hold your reservation.

If your company has a corporate rate at this hotel that you are still able to book within The Linux Foundation block using your corporate rate.

Air Travel
Reserve your air travel as soon as possible. Portland International Airport (PDX) is the closest major airport located just 9 miles from the hotel.  We recommend that you contact Blue Star Transportation at +1 503 249 1837 for airport/hotel transportation needs or take a taxi.

The MAX Light Rail is the most cost effective way to get from the airport to the hotel, however, please note that the closest light rail stop is .5 miles away from the hotel (Morrison/SW 3rd Ave Station) and it would take approximately an hour to get to the hotel.  Using a combination of Light Rail and bus transportation you can eliminate the walking time, but should still plan on an hour of travel time.

TriMet Trip Planner should help you plan your trip from the airport to the hotel.

Ground Transportation and Parking
Valet Parking is available at the Marriott for $28/day (self-parking is not available on-site).  There are several other parking garages located within 2 blocks of the hotel with lower daily rates.  Locations include: SW 1st Street between SW Clay and SW Columbia, SW 3rd Street between SW Clay and SW Columbia and SW 1st Street between SW Madison and SW Main.

The Portland Streetcar, the MAX Light Rail and bus lines can easily connect attendees to wherever they want to go in Portland.

Directions from Portland International Airport (PDX) to the Hotel.
