UC San Diego Catering is eco-friendly. We are introducing a new variety of compostable beverage cups, plates, and utensils.

DINING SERVICES
HDH has selected Wilcox Farms to supply Certfied Humane Raised and Handled Cage-Free Eggs at all HDH Dining Locations and Retail Units!  We first committed to Cage-Free eggs last January, and have spent the past several months researching vendors and negotiating contracts.

Our primary goal is to bring about complete HDH conversion from conventional eggs to cage free eggs while still being fiscally responsible.  This project has been driven by:

  • Examination of quality cage-free suppliers who will work through our existing distribution channels
  • Expansion and continuation of our overall sustainability goal
  • Education relative to sustainable/socially responsible and environmental issues
  • Customer service/interest in humanely produced products.
There will be a media event with Jeff and Jerr morning show during the first week of October – stay tuned!

RD in da HOUSE
Becky McDivitt has posted a new online video about nutrition at our Dining Locations. Check it out on the HDH website at http://hdh.ucsd.edu/diningservices/nutrition.asp!

We have launched a composting pilot program in Dining Services. Now you can throw away your trash, recycle your plastics, AND scrape your uneaten food into the compostable receptacles.

The Produce Patch has sprouted at Plaza on the Side, OceanView Terrace, and Café Ventanas.

CANYONVISTA
CanyonVista is revamping its pasta station, converting it into a "Mediterranean" theme station featuring flat-bread pizzas and sandwiches, lighter pasta dishes, and salads from that region.

We'll also feature a vertical rotisserie for the preparation of authentic Greek Gyros and other European favorites incorporating carved meats.

CAFE VENTANAS
Introducing Vietnamese Spring rolls and Lettuce Wraps!

Look for the new Salad and Wrap station... healthy and filling.

We’re now offering Panini sandwiches 7 days a week.

FOODWORX
This spring, Foodworx is rockin' Sirius Satellite radio.

HOUSING
Toby’s Spot, a re-use effort between Dining and Housing, continues to expand. Take your meals to-go on permanent dishware, and when you’re done, leave them at Toby’s Spot, located in each Apartment or ResHall ground floor elevator area. Dining staff will pick up the dirty dishes regularly. Nothing to throw away, and just as easy as using plastic!

CUSTODIAL
Custodial operations has investing in new equipment for cleaning floors (hard surfaces and carpet). This new equipment improves air quality by sucking moisture away from carpets, reducing the risk of mold and other airborne allergens • increases safety due to its 100% water pickup, which minimizes the risk for slip and fall accidents • is sustainable- it doesn’t wear down carpet and flooring as quickly as a vaccum, preserving the life of materials • reduces environmental impact with its detergent dispensing system, which maximizes the use of chemicals and water and reduces waste-stream contribution.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS 2009

The first phase of the $121 million North Campus / Transfer Student Housing (north of ERC) is due to open in fall 2009. When all phases are complete, this new facility will provide 1,800 beds, a satellite bookstore, a cafe, and more.

A new Administration Building is currently underway at Revelle College near Plaza Café. The work will result in a small loss of recreational grass area, as well as site grading, heavy equipment, underground utilities, material deliveries, foundation preparation, and concrete form work.

The Health Sciences Grad School Housing is schedule to break ground in March 2009. We're excited to build this first on-campus housing for medical and graduate students.

OLE! THE ONLINE EXPERIENCE
Ole! the online experience from Earl's Place, has single sign-on access, so that students don't need a separate user name and password to log on and place their orders for groceries and sundries. With this new feature, all you need is your campus P.I.D and PAC, and you're in!
