2009-2010 Social Sciences Supper Club Series
Featuring Professor James H. Fowler, Ph.D. UCSD Department of Political Science

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 5:30 pm,

Connected: The Surprising Power
of Our Social Networks and
How They Shape Our Lives”

UC San Diego Faculty Club

Featuring Professor James H. Fowler, Ph.D.
UCSD Department of Political Science

Professor Fowler presents intriguing evidence to show that our social networks drive and shape virtually every aspect of our lives. How we feel, whom we marry, whether we fall ill, how much money we make, and whether we vote all depend on what others around us – even those distantly connected to us – are doing, thinking, and feeling. Professor Fowler shows that these connections have an ancient evolutionary past, and describes how this will affect our new life as technology moves our networks online.

Dr. Fowler is an Associate Professor in the Political Science
Department at UCSD and in the Center for Wireless and
Population Health at CALIT2.  His current interests include social
networks, behavioral economics, evolutionary game theory,
political participation, the evolution of cooperation, and geno-politics (the study of the genetic basis of political behavior).

Professor Fowler’s research on genopolitics with Chris Dawes was featured in New York Times Magazine’s 2008 Year in Ideas. His research on social networks with Nicholas Christakis was featured in Time’s Year in Medicine in both 2007 and 2008, and in Harvard Business Review’s Breakthrough Business Ideas for 2009.

Supper Club events include a wine reception, full dinner, and Faculty Club parking in addition to the lecture. Purchase a table for eight at a discounted rate and bring your friends, neighbors or
co-workers. To register, please send $65/person or $500/table and the completed form below to: Social Sciences Supper Club, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, California 92093-0502. Please make checks payable to UC Regents.
Reservations or additional information may be obtained by calling

Fall Art Exhibition:
September 15- December 15, 2009

Jaga Nath Glassman “Landscapes and Bodies”

Jaga Nath Glassman is a fine artist, photographer and graphic artist. Her representational work has been well received in many public venues such as the Palm Springs Desert Museum, where she was an award –winning artist for her oil paintings. Her work can best be described as the synergy of fantasy and tranquility. In a life that has been a continual quest for knowledge and understanding, she has achieved fulfillment through her art. Beyond her extensive, diversified studies culminating in a Bachelor’s degree in the Biological Sciences, and a Juris Doctorate degree, she has also examined Eastern religion and philosophy. The sense of balance and serenity that her art invokes in the viewer is attributable to the inner peace she has found through her art.
Please join us for a reception in the artist’s honor on October 2nd from 5 to 7 pm.
