How to Protect Your College Student From the Flu

As many parents and family members are aware, influenza has been circulating throughout San Diego since Spring, and can be spread easily from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to help limit the spread of the flu at UC San Diego, but, we need your help!  We are working closely with the San Diego Public Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning the UC San Diego campus community.  We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to the campus.  For now, university staff are doing everything we can to keep our institution operating as usual.

Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • Encourage your student to practice good hand hygiene by washing their hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Remind your student to practice respiratory etiquette by covering their mouth and nose with a tissue when they cough or sneeze. If they do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into their elbow or shoulder, not into their hands. Tell them to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread this way.
  • Provide your student with alcohol-based cleaning wipes or sprays and instruct them to clean commonly used areas, such as computer keyboards, door handles, and desks.
  • Make sure your student knows the signs and symptoms of the flu. A fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius. Tell them to look for possible signs of fever in others - if the person feels very warm, has a flushed appearance, or is sweating or shivering.
  • Emphasize to your student that they should stay home if they have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever. This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Students should not go to class or work if they have flu or flu-like symptoms.
  • Remind your student to promptlyseek medical attention if they have a medical condition that puts them at increased risk of severe illness from flu (obesity, pregnancy, chronic lung, heart, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, immunocompromised) OR if they develop severe symptoms such as increased fever, shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, or rapid breathing.
  • Encourage your student to visit the Student Health Service Web site for general information, or call if they want to speak to a healthcare provider.

Here are some things Student Health Services is planning to help your student at UCSD:

  • Same Day appointments and/or phone triage for students
  • "Sick Kits" containing thermometer, cough syrup, acetaminophen, throat lozenges, hand sanitizer, and tissues for purchase at the Student Health Center.
  • "Flu Buddies" to assist with delivery of meals and sick kits, and to check-in with ill students
  • Flu vaccines-both seasonal and H1N1-will be available at the Student Health Center, as well as mini-clinics around campus; check the Student Health Services Web site for information on dates/times/locations. Student Health Services is still waiting for the H1N1 vaccine, but will notify students by Twitter and on the Student Health Services Web site when it is available.
  • Sponsoring a student video contest for the best flu prevention U-tube video. The winner will receive cash and prizes, as well as a display on all Wellness Web siteand UCSD TV.
  • Participating in weekly meetings of the UC San Diego Emergency Operations Committee to share information, continue to update plans, and provide support for the campus as needed
  • Updating information on the Student Health Services Web site and working with TritonLink to ensure accurate and timely sharing of information and services

Please visit the Student Health Service Web site  or the UCSD TritonLink Flu Web page for ongoing updates.

On-Campus Housing Information

As students arrive on campus many family members are asking questions about on-campus housing. From our Housing office, see information regarding room assignments, billing, and the move-in process.

Room Assignment

Your student has been notified of their room assignment and roommate(s) information via a "Welcome Letter/E-Mail."  College Residential Life Offices sent this e-letter directly to your student containing important move-in information including a link for your student to access their room assignment, mailbox number, and roommate information online.

Rooms were assigned by College-based Residential Life Offices. Students were matched based on their gender, date of housing application, College of registration, and preferences indicated on the Personal History Form they submitted.  All these factors played a role in the room assignment process.

IMPORTANT: If your student has questions about their assigned roommate he/she may only contact their College of Registration Residential Life Office for information.   E-mail addresses and phone numbers for each College can be found on the Housing Web site.

For information regarding Early Move-In, September Orientation and the Buy Up Dining Plan options ask your student to log into My Room Assignment for more information.  Take the time with your student to look at the links provided on the left side of this site to answer all your housing related questions.

Billing and the UC San Diego Billing Statement

First year students were sent their university billing statement via e-mail on August 31 with a September 18 payment deadline.  Keep in mind Housing charges are separate from registration fees, and in the Housing Contract process your student chose to pay Housing fees on a Monthly, Quarterly, or In-Full basis. Therefore, when reviewing your student's billing statement, keep in mind that payments for fees/tuition and Housing may have different payment deadlines.

Early Move-In

This year all students living on-campus will be offered the option to move in earlier than the first day of the Housing contract, which is Saturday, September 19, 2009. The cost for early move-in is $50 per day and could begin as early as Wednesday, September 16.  This information does not apply to residents attending the September orientation sessions as these students have early move in arrangements already confirmed. More details will be available on the My Room Assignment Web site.

No Show - Loss of Space

If an on-campus resident does not take occupancy by 4:00 pm on Tuesday, September 22 it will be understood that the student no longer wishes to live on-campus and their space will be given to a wait listed student.  If there are extenuating travel issues, students must call their College Residential Life Office for a possible exception.

Revelle/Muir Residence Hall Construction Activity

Construction and/or remodeling to residential and dining buildings on the UC San Diego campus and in the vicinity of the residence halls and apartments is scheduled for the 2009 - 2010 academic year.  Construction is expected to occur during normal daytime working hours and will result in disturbances and disruptions, including but not limited to, increased noise and dust in the area surrounding the residence halls and apartments. Students living on-campus were advised of this scheduled construction in their 2009 - 2010 Housing Contract.

Does your student need to waive UC Health Insurance (SHIP)?

Student health insurance is mandated by the UC regents.  Therefore, insurance policies (even personal policies) must have sufficient coverage to ensure students are able to obtain needed health services.  The University provides a plan where students are AUTOMATICALLY enrolled.  If you have other health insurance that meets the required coverage, students may choose to opt out of the UC insurance plan (SHIP).  Before your student begins classes at UC San Diego be sure you review your health insurance policy with your student and understand what is covered and how to access services before classes start. For more information about the plan, how your student can waive the UC insurance, waiver deadlines, and other information, please visit the SHIP Web site.

Welcome Week & Convocation

convoUC San Diego's annual tradition of Welcome Week is a week of activities and events designed to assist our students in making friends, learning about campus resources, and exploring the many opportunities for involvement on campus. Two important campus traditions are part of Welcome Week: Convocation and Unolympics.

Convocation is a tradition at UC San Diego that brings over 4,000 new students together for a special welcome to the university's community of scholars.  This year Convocation will take place on Tuesday, September 22 at 5:00 pm on RIMAC Field.  Students will hear from noteworthy and honorable speakers, such as Chancellor Fox, a distinguished faculty member, the Associated Students President, and an aspiring young alumnus.  Following Convocation, dinner will be served on RIMAC Field.  In this communal setting, students will be able to mingle with faculty and discuss their aspirations for their undergraduate experience.  The next time this same group of young scholars meets again on RIMAC Field will

unolympics

be Commencement!  Please encourage your student to attend and be part of this memorable college experience.   See the Convocation Web site for more information.

The 27th annual Unolympics is one of the longest running traditions at UC San Diego. In this competition, all six Colleges come together to compete for the coveted Golden Shoe trophy. Unolympics will take place Wednesday, September 23 at 1:30 pm on the RIMAC Track & Field. Ask your student if their College won "the shoe" this year! See the Unolympics Web site for more information.

Other events part of Welcome Week include S'mores at the Shores, a Hypnosis Show, Triton Power Hour, Meet the Beach, movie screenings, and tons of sessions to learn more about the place students will call home! Learn more about all the events of Welcome Week.

Summer Send Off Picnics

sendoffThe UCSD Alumni Association invites incoming students and their families to an annual tradition, the Summer Send Off Picnics. These fun, family-style picnics serve as a welcome to the UC San Diego community, and ease incoming students' transition into college by connecting them with other students from their region. The picnics are organized by regional alumni chapters, so many graduates will be on hand to answer questions and share stories of surf, sun, and studies at UC San Diego.

This is a FREEevent and the main dish will be provided by the local UCSD alumni chapter. However, this is a potluck picnic, so students/families should bring a salad, side dish, dessert or beverage to share with four to six other guests.

For dates and to RSVP online see the Alumni Association Web site.

Parent & Family Giving

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

givingWhether your remarkable young person is a returning student or just starting at UC San Diego, welcome to a new academic year and sharing an amazing educational experience! When you cannot be here, rest assured that our administrators, professors, and staff will guide, connect and care for your student through wellness efforts, communications tools, and educational enhancements. And what helps to support these vital programs is the Parents Fund ... the gift that keeps on giving.

Below are just a small sampling of how donations to the Parents Fund support UC San Diego students:

  • Student Wellness Initiative - To ensure that UC San Diego students are happy and healthy, the university is addressing their physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs with a holistic, collaborative approach across multiple disciplines. Learn more about student wellness initiatives on the Wellness Center Web site.
  • Family Connections- The campus has launched a myriad of programs and tools that enable families to stay connected, including the Family Helpline at (858) 534-7273, Family Weekend activities October 23-25, the monthly Triton Family Connection e-newsletter, and see our enhanced Parents & Families Web site.
  • UC San Diego's Six Colleges - Whether you choose to give to the Parents Fund or to a Provost's Fund at your student's College, gifts of all sizes help provide essential complements to classroom instruction and enrich the educational experience through leadership training, tutoring, and expanded resources during midterms and finals.

giving2The University of California takes its role as educator of our future leaders very seriously. These are financially challenging times for individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations such as public universities, but preserving the excellence of our academic programs and campus life is a top priority.

Today, less than 12% of our annual budget comes from the State of California for education. Although support for public institutions of higher education continues to shrink, UC San Diego still stands strong-in fact, the latestU.S. News & World Report rankings place UCSD as the 7th best public university in the nation.  But to bridge the funding gap, we must increasingly rely on the generosity of families like you to help maintain the world-class education and experience UC San Diego provides our 28,500 students.

Charitable gifts to the Parents Fund are more important now than any other time in the history of our young university. For the 2009-2010 academic year, our goal is to raise $1.1 bannermillion through Parent and Family Giving to boost vital programs and initiatives that may be threatened in the current economic climate.

It is easy to give to the UC San Diego Parents Fund or to a Provost's Fund at your student's College - simply visit the Parent and Family Giving Web siteand click on the "Give Now" icon. For more information, please contact the Parent and Family Giving Director, Toni Tschann, at ttschann@ucsd.edu or (858) 822-3867.

Strong families prepare students to succeed at UC San Diego, and connected families help us maintain the level of excellence that our students deserve. Thank you for your gifts.

Spotlights

Many of our readers of the Triton Family Connection e-newsletter know that the Spotlight section was used to spotlight a student, staff member, alumni, and program on campus. This year however, we chose to highlight how the campus will be promoting student wellness, research regarding students, and a tidbit of news maybe not as widely known.

Wellness Spotlight: Overall Wellness

livewellThere are many new challenges and adventures that await your student as he or she makes the transition to college - meeting new people, navigating a large campus, getting involved, or finding a job. The Office of Student Wellness supports students in developing healthy lifelong habits, such as exercising, having a supportive social network, and finding healthy ways to cope with stress so that students will excel in the classroom and make the most of their time in college. Each month, the Office of Student Wellness will focus on one of the eight dimensions of wellness to promote a year-long, integrative approach to well-being. September features all eight dimensions of wellness to introduce students to the LiveWell UC San Diego wellness model. To learn about the wellness services and events offered in September, please visit Wellness in Focus.

Research Spotlight: Biggest Worries of First Year Students at UC San Diego

According to the 2008 Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshman Survey, 52.4% of UC San Diego first year students were most concerned with doing well academically in their first year at UC San Diego. The next largest percentage of students responding to the survey noted that they were also concerned with trying to "find" themselves in a sense of personal meaning and self-identity. Students also responded that an area where they will need the most help during coming year was in making career and academic plans.

If you would like to assist your student academically, recommend that they speak to their faculty member or teaching assistant, form a study group, or speak to an academic advisor at their College. If your student is concerned about identifying a career, or a career which has meaning and value to them personally, recommend they visit the Career Services Center. Finally, if your student is struggling to find themselves encourage them to get involved with a student organization or visit a Campus Community Center.

There are plenty of resources at UC San Diego to ensure your student is successful. If you are looking to point your student in the right direction for assistance, contact Parent & Family Programs by calling the Family Helpline (858) 534-7273 or email parents@ucsd.edu.
