Welcome, Class of 2013 and returning John Muir students
And a special welcome to those transfer students who just moved in to their new apartments at The Village. This is the first year that housing has been available for transfer students at UCSD in a very long time. We are delighted that you decided to join this new residential community on campus.
Some news:
You've probably noticed the chain-link fence surrounding our dining hall. Sierra Summit is undergoing major
renovations, necessitating its closure for the year. Fear not, however -- Ocean View Terrace at Marshall and Plaza
Café aren't far away. Snacks and hot drinks can still be purchased at MOM; hot beverages and sandwiches at the
Mandeville Coffee Cart or The Grove;
Thai food at Hi Thai; vegetarian soups and wraps at the Co-Op, and a variety of
food and drinks at Porter's Pub. More culinary options...
Moreover, our dining hall is not our only construction zone. Any day now, contractors will be excavating just south of Sierra Summit, to set the foundation of what will become Muir's fourth residential building. The nine-story apartment complex is scheduled to open in Fall 2011. Everyone is invited to the groundbreaking on October 13 at 1:00 p.m.
You may want to stock up on ear-plugs, we are in for some disruption and noise. But I'm sure, flexible and intelligent Muir students that you are, you will take it all in stride. And while we suffer the inconvenience, picture just how splendid the enlarged, improved, and redecorated Sierra Summit will be when it reopens in Fall, 2010! There will be more seating, shorter lines, an updated look, and more menu options.
So, once again, welcome to Muir College, and to this amazing opportunity to study at one of the world's most challenging institutions of higher learning, under the guidance of some of our era's most talented faculty, and in the company of some of its most gifted students, yourselves among them!
