Getting wind energy
to the grid efficiently
The Lab has launched a project to find more effective ways to integrate variable loads from renewable sources, like wind, to the electrical grid, using thermal energy storage. More>
Atomic snapshot catches
protein motor in action
Using a state-of-the-art protein crystallography beamline at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source, researchers have captured a critical action shapshot of an enzyme that is vital to the survival of all biological cells. More>
Helping India promote
energy efficiency
India's rapid economic growth rate coupled with an aging energy infrastructure suggest dire environmental consequences if “business as usual” continues. That's why Lab experts are working to expand collaborations with India on energy efficiency. More>
Brain simulation wins Gordon Bell Prize
Researchers from the IBM Almaden Research Center and Berkeley Lab have won a prestigious Gordon Bell Prize for performing the first near real-time cortical simulation of the brain that exceeds the scale of a cat cortex and contains 1 billion spiking neurons and 10 trillion individual learning synapses. The Molecular Foundry – Chemistry on the Nanoscale
Nature has shown that chemistry on the nanoscale can deliver spectacular results. Biological systems use nanoscale chemistry to transform and store energy, perform self-repair and adapt to changing environmental conditions. Learning to harness nanoscale chemistry as effectively as nature should open doors to advances in a great many scientific fields. The study of the chemistry behind nanoscale materials and processing is part of the mission of Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry. more>
