Members of the ERC Community—
In recent weeks UC San Diego has been rocked by several disturbing acts of racism and intolerance. As provost I want to say unequivocally that violence, threats, and intimidation have no place in this university. Fear erodes trust and threatens the bonds that unite us as a rich and diverse community. We cannot – we will not – allow this to happen.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said that “hate and force cannot be in just a part of the world without having an effect on the rest of it.” All of us are affected by recent events. None of us can afford to be complacent. Eleanor spent her life fighting for causes she thought important: racial equality, the status of women, and worldwide human rights. At ERC we proudly dedicate ourselves to sustaining her commitment to justice and human dignity. It is the foundation on which we build.
Everyone has a part to play in this struggle. The faculty and staff of ERC are working together to plan programs and activities that respond to the current crisis. Students have given voice to their concerns in public forums and private conversations, and are encouraged to continue to do so. Alumni are stepping forward, and we welcome their help and support. The challenges we face run deep, and will not be solved quickly. Working together and drawing strength from each other, we seek to overcome them.
Confronting intolerance is always difficult and sometimes painful. I encourage all of you to take advantage of college resources. Please feel free to come and talk at any time with me, a member of the staff, or an RA. The main office and Residence Life are open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and RAs are available 24/7. In every way possible we are here for each and every one of you.
Alan Houston, Provost
And the Staff of ERC
