Every year, in what we call the MMW Writing Showcase, the MMW Program honors the best papers written for the course during the preceding academic year. TAs who teach MMW2-MMW6 nominate students who they think have written papers that combine excellent scholarship on important and intriguing topics with clear and engaging writing. It is quite an accomplishment to be a Showcase nominee: of the more than four thousand papers written every year for MMW, fewer than one hundred are selected to be Showcase winners. The authors of these outstanding papers-the Showcase writers-each receive a certificate that expresses our admiration for their work and attests to their achievement.
In addition to the in-class curriculum, the MMW Program also looks for effective and informal ways to enrich students learning outside the classroom. Each year, the program offers trips that provide students first-hand exposure to a variety of cultural and religious traditions in our local community. In the past, for example, we have offered trips to a Buddhist monastery and a Hindu temple in order to better understand how Buddhists and Hindus practice their faith. We have also taken students to enjoy local natural treasures like Torrey Pines State Preserve, while reading nature-inspired poetry from around the world. We have even visited a camel dairy so that students can better appreciate the important role camels have played in history. The MMW program is always open to suggestions for trips or activities that can further students appreciation for cultural diversity and historical awareness.
