chapter news Executive Committee Election Remember to vote before the November 1st deadline. There is still time to mail your ballot (find it in the September-October Hi Sierran, on Page 5), or drop it off at the chapter office. You may omit your membership number if you do not have it handy. The Election Committee (Dave Grubb, Edie Harmon, and Pat Klaasen) will count the ballots on Monday, November 2nd, at 4:00 PM at the Chapter Office. Harriet Allen dies at 95; environmentalist successfully pushed for the California Desert Protection Act In 1954, she joined the Desert Protective Council and helped preserve land in Joshua Tree, Death Valley and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Active in the Sierra Club, she chaired its San Diego chapter in 1963 and helped lead a grass-roots campaign that resulted in the 1970 expansion of Torrey Pines State Reserve along San Diego's coast. Sierra Club members living in San Diego and Imperial Counties, California, are automatically enrolled in the San Diego Chapter, which currently numbers over 15,000. Meetings and outings are open to members and interested non-members. The San Diego Chapter monthly program meets the 3rd Friday of every month except for Nov 29th, a Thursday, and Dec 15th, a Saturday at Joyce Beers Center (3900 Vermont Street.
