Did you know?
It usually takes less water to grow a vegetable garden and fruit trees than grass. You can eat vegetables and fruit, but unless you have sheep, nothing is going to eat your grass.

Who we are
San Diego Food Not Lawns is a food justice organization committed to enlightening people about the problems with our food system and working to address those problems with creative solutions.
What we do
We run Farmer on the Block, a movie (documentary) series, a monthly potluck with guest speakers, gleaning programs and seed swaps. We also host the Cultivating Food Justice Conference, which is one of the largest food justice conferences in California.
What's next
Most of our energy is being spent planning the Cultivating Food Justice Conference with a coalition of other food justice related groups. This is a free, two-day event that's been going for three years. This year it will be held April 24th & 25th on San Diego State University. It's entirely free and is comprised of a ton of workshops, some about policy discussions (like how to make it easier to start community gardens) and some about how-to subjects (like food preservation, beekeeping, etc.). This year we have two amazing keynote speakers, Raj Patel (Saturday) and Barry Logan (Sunday). We need lots of volunteer help, so go register for the conference. Even if you can't help out, please register as it helps us raise funds in coming years (we have to prove people attended).
How you can help
We're always looking for people interested in getting to work fixing the food system. We have many volunteer opportunities where you can help your neighbors eat better, grow more food and feed their neighbors.
Learn more
We're always adding to our online resources of recommended books, seed companies and general information about producing your own food on a budget.
