Campus News & Updates

Commuter Student Services

Last month, Parent and Family Programs announced a partnership with Student Legal Services to offer our first Parent & Family Seminar: Helping Your Student Move Off-Campus. An important resource we failed to discuss in the seminar is Commuter Student Services.

If your student is moving off-campus, or already living off-campus, be sure they are aware of UC San Diego's Commuter Student Services (CSS), a resource center that shares off-campus housing information and enriches the lives of commuter students. CSS provides free one-to-one housing consultations to aid students in a successful search for off-campus housing. Information on local rental rates, bus routes, and how to be a good neighbor or roommate is also provided. Online resources include the Off-Campus Housing Directory, which provides students with exclusive rental and roommate listings convenient to campus. CSS offers quarterly workshops for commuters such as Commuter Appreciation Day, Commuter Cooking Class, Midterm Munchies, Moving Off-Campus Workshop, Roommate Matching Social, and Roommates: From Conflict to Friendship.

To learn more about Commuter Student Services, visit the CSS Web site or encourage your student to stop by the Commuter Lounge, Level 1 of Price Center East. Located at the heart of campus, this lounge was specifically designed to support commuter students with televisions, couches, study tables, board games, magazines, vending machines, and a kitchenette. The Commuter Lounge is the perfect place for commuter students to meet friends and spend time before or after classes.

For additional questions regarding Commuter Student Services or the Off-Campus Housing Director, call (858) 534-3670 or email offcampushousing@ucsd.edu.

Parent & Family Giving

Taking the Next Step: UC San Diego's 2010 Graduates Prepare to Embark on New Journeys

As families, we appreciate and find joy in all of our students' achievements, and a milestone such as graduating from college is a particularly special occasion.   This month marks graduation for 7,673 students at UC San Diego, and more than 65,000 family members and friends are expected to attend the 11 commencement ceremonies.

give1If your student is among those graduating this month-congratulations!  He or she joins the ranks of more than 130,000 stellar alumni of one of the nation's most prestigious universities, with a bright future ahead.  UC San Diego is proud to graduate a class of students with such exceptional academic achievements, diverse extracurricular interests and passionate spirits that will lead them to a great variety of careers and notable accomplishments.  Chase Bauer, Justice Castaneda, and Stephanie Usry are among the extraordinary seniors that will graduate this month.

  • Chase Bauer traveled to Honduras to build a filtration system providing clean water to over 700 people, volunteered in a rural village in Guatemala and helped to repaint and repair an orphanage in Peru.  In between his travels and community service work, the Human Development major completed his senior honors thesis and earned acceptance into the Masters in Educational Studies program at UC San Diego.
  • Justice Castaneda was 20 years old when he went to a military recruiting office.  At the time, he had been involved in drugs and seen many of his close friends go to prison.  Now the 29-year-old is about to graduate from UC San Diego, where he excelled as an Urban Studies and Planning major.  He also served as the President of the university's Student Veteran Organization, collaborating with staff to create events and develop initiatives to support the campus' 200 undergraduate students who have served in the military.
  • Stephanie Usry survived a life-threatening car accident during her first year at UC San Diego. She spent a month in a drug-induced coma, and miraculously pulled through and returned to UC San Diego, where she dedicated her time to student life and became one of the most devoted and passionate student leaders on campus. Through her involvement with Eleanor Roosevelt College Council, the Associated Students, Campus Tours, the Student Foundation and the UCSD Alumni Association, Usry helped foster a supportive and active student community on campus.

Many of the thousands of students graduating would not be receiving their diplomas if it were not for the generosity of our UC San Diego community.  Philanthropic gifts from our alumni, faculty, friends, and families ensure access to a world-class education and rich campus experience at UCSD.  From Invent the Future student support campaign donations to Parents Fund unrestricted gifts, UC San Diego relies on private support more than you might know. give2

When their daughter Monica enrolled at UC San Diego, Salma and Thomas Haider did not hesitate to support UCSD through a gift in addition to fees.   "We think UC San Diego is one of the best," says Thomas.  "It's a beautiful school," added Salma.  "Monica loves the faculty, and she finds the students very down to earth ... and smart!"

The support of families like the Haiders has helped numerous students realize their dreams.

Whether or not your student is graduating this month, we hope that you make a gift to help all students at UC San Diego.  It is an investment in the future-an investment to support outstanding research, education, public service, and so much more at UC San Diego.  Your gifts ensure that UC San Diego continues to deliver the local impact, national influence and global reach of one of the nation's top universities.

Giving to UC San Diego is easy online.  To donate to the Parents Fund, please visit the Parent and Family Giving Web site and click on "Give Now."  For more information, please contact Parent Giving Director Toni Tschann by email at ttschann@ucsd.edu or call (858) 822-3867.
