About

Kororaa was born out of a desire to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. The main goal of Kororaa is to provide a complete, easy to use system for general computing.

Originally based on Gentoo Linux in 2005, Kororaa was re-born in 2010 as a Fedora Remix1 with tweaks and extras to make the system “just work” out of the box. Why Fedora? Lots of reasons!

Desktops
Kororaa comes in several installable versions which include both the KDE and GNOME desktops.

KDE 4.x GNOME 3.x
Kororaa 17 KDE desktop Kororaa 17 GNOME desktop

Default applications
Kororaa sets the default applications to those that end users typically want. For example, Firefox is the default web browser in KDE (instead of Konqueror) and VLC is the default media player (instead of Dragon Player in KDE and Totem in GNOME). There is generally one popular program installed for each task, although alternatives (such as the Google Chrome web browser) are available via the package manager for a quick install.

Package repositories
Kororaa also pre-configures several third party repositories, making it easier to install additional software that everyone uses. These include:

  • Adobe Flash
  • Google Chrome and Talk plugin
  • RPMFusion
  • VirtualBox

Users can easily install Adobe’s Flash plugin via the package manager, thanks to the flash-plugin-helper RPM metapackage.

Driver support
Kororaa makes use of Ubuntu’s Jockey Device Driver manager, for simple installation of third party drivers such as those for NVIDIA graphics cards and certain wireless devices.

Kororaa also comes with all the development tools and kernel headers you need to easily install out of tree kernel modules, such as those required by VirtualBox. These modules are automatically built when you get a new kernel update thanks to Dynamic Kernel Module Support.

Goals
The main goal of Kororaa is to provide a complete, easy to use system for general computing which is assisted by the following:

  • Support for as much hardware as possible
  • End user desired applications as defaults (e.g. Firefox over Konqueror)
  • Ability to play all media out of the box using free software (with Flash the exception)
  • Ability to use Flash on the web (installable, if the user wants)
  • Target specific applications for tasks without a lot of bloat
  • Provide simple means to getting support
  • Provide howtos, guides, on how to use the system
  • Build a little community of Linux users

Note: Kororaa is not provided or supported by the Fedora Project. Official, unmodified Fedora software is available through the Fedora Project website.

    Hello Folks,

I have been wanting to see a KDE4+ based Fedora, since I am not much of a gnome DE user. Thats just my preference, but thats the beautiful thing about linux; Freedom of Choice. Opposed to the releases from “Redmond”. This will allow me to provide another alternative that I may provide to my “clients”.
So I thank you for this release.

Thanks :-) Please let me know if you have any problems or suggestions on how to make it better – I need to do a final release (not beta) at some point.

      Cheers,
      Chris
