Streaming sports online has long been a trend in the sporting community, but the pandemic has bolstered sports fans’ interest and changed sports streaming trends now more than ever. As the NFL season gets going, more fans will likely clamor to catch one of the U.S.’ most anticipated sporting events.

To keep up with the changing trends in sports streaming, many sports channels now provide live streams online as an extension of their services. NBC Universal, for example, paid USD 7.7 billion for the rights to broadcast and stream the Olympics in the U.S. until 2032. Viewers were able to live stream the event on their smartphones and tablets. While it’s great that these channels are making sports more accessible, most of them, unfortunately, requires an existing subscription to a channel or an additional subscription.

Several legitimate free streaming sites are generally safe. However, there are also unsecured sites that could harbor malicious software.

Whether you’re keeping up with the NFL, NBA, or the F1, here are some things you can do to protect yourself when streaming sports securely.

If you can afford it, stream only on official sites

While streaming and paying for access to stream on official sites or services might be costly, it’s a worthwhile investment for some peace of mind. Plus, if you’re a fan of a particular sport, you’ll likely want to keep up with all the various games happening in the season and will need a reliable service for all your streaming needs. Many of these sites, too, have support pages or chats in case you run into issues while streaming.

Free streaming sites might be great, but they can be unreliable, and you might run into plenty of issues while watching the game halfway through.

Download security software when streaming on free services

If you’re streaming for free on a new website, downloading security software like antivirus or a virtual private network (VPN) could help protect your devices from malware and encrypt your internet connection. Many antivirus software or plugins have malware scanning capabilities that help detect if a site harbors malicious content.

A VPN, on the other hand, encrypts your internet connection by rerouting it through a secure tunnel. This prevents malicious hackers and third parties from accessing your data or spying on your online activities. It’s worth noting that a VPN doesn’t protect you from malware or viruses but it does help maintain some level of privacy while you’re online and is especially useful on unknown sites.

Check that the site is secure

It’s often easy to determine if a website is suspicious or fake. Most websites on the internet have SSL certificates that make them secure. However, it’s always good to check if the sites are safe by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Does it have plenty of ads?
  • Does the design of the website look right?
  • Are you constantly being redirected to different websites?
  • Is there a padlock icon next to the URL?

By looking at the various signs, you’re better able to decide if the site is safe for streaming live games or not.

Regardless of the sites you’re visiting, it’s always wise to download security software to protect yourself and your devices. It’s also good to practice some vigilance and be aware of the types you’re visiting.
