Hi Experts, we have to ingest the data from API , and we have options like direct API mode or APIM . There are nearly 10 data sources, and APIM would cost us. So which options we should go for on which scenario, do we have any benchmark criteria in terms of performance, and costs.

Looking to connect with teams using Power BI for self-service reporting and insights

I lead product management for HR dashboards at a large organization, and we're migrating our self-service analytics reporting to Power BI. I have 13+ years in People Analytics, mostly on other BI platforms, so I'm looking to learn from teams already doing this well.

I'd love to hear from HR or other functional leaders leaders who use Power BI for end-user self-service. In particular:

Dashboard design: What does a great dashboard look like in Power BI? What are the art of the possibilities? Any examples or design patterns you'd recommend?

Adoption and enablement: What training and support materials worked best for non-technical end users (for example, filtering, slicers, bookmarks, and exporting)?

Governance: How do you manage workspaces and apps, and handle row-level security for sensitive HR data?

Lessons learned: What would you do differently if you were migrating again?

I'd also welcome a short conversation or demo with anyone willing to share how their team uses Power BI. Please reply here or message me directly. Thanks Natalie

Fabric Copy Job CDC Error On Incremental Load

I'm using the fabric copy job to incrementally copy data from a CDC enabled table on SQL Server 2008 R2. The initial full load ran successfully, however all subsequent runs are failing and returning the following error:

Failure happened on 'Source' side. ErrorCode=SqlOperationFailed,'Type=Microsoft.DataTransfer.Common.Shared.HybridDeliveryException,Message=A database operation failed with the following error: 'Incorrect syntax near '.'.'

I'm assuming the error is caused by some dynamic sql script generated by the copy job in the backend. Does anyone know how I can determine what's actually causing this error, and how I can fix it?

For context, this error is happening on our production SQL Server 2008. I tested the same copy job on our dev SQL Server 2008 and had no issues whatsoever with the initial load and incremental runs. Both SQL Servers are identical.

Serverless. We use this as DWH.

a New client has more than 6TB of data.

What data store we will use as the gold layer where we can build reports:

fabric warehouse or fabric sql db since we are in Azure sql db?

I yet to understand the hyperscale version and if this help chose fabric sql db?

thanks

Allow multi-column conditions /output in Power BI Activator rules (Power BI visual-based alerts)

Description:

When I create an Activator alert from a Power BI report visual, the rule can only evaluate the single column or measure it was created from, and the alert can only reference that same value. This blocks common governance and monitoring scenarios.

Example scenario:
I wanted an alert for Dev workspaces that sit on a billable (Premium/Fabric) capacity. That needs a condition on both Workspace Name (contains “Dev”) and Capacity/Billing type (not blank). Activator can’t combine the two in one rule, so I had to build the alert in Power Automate with a DAX query instead.

Limitations:

A condition can use only one column or measure, with no AND/OR across several attributes.

The alert message or action can include only that same column. I can’t add related details like workspace name, dataset link, or owner.

There’s no way to run a DAX query as the rule logic.

Requested improvements:

Conditions across multiple columns/measures (AND/OR).

Selectable output fields, so the Teams or email action can include several columns, and dynamic links.

Optionally, the ability to define the trigger with a DAX query, as the Power Automate “Run a query against a dataset” action does.

Impact: Without this, governance and monitoring alerts need a separate Power Automate flow, which is harder to build and maintain than a native Activator rule.

Hi everyone, this is my submission for this week's Workout Wednesday!

Bookmarks can be a little bit tricky sometimes especially when there's lots of elements to show and hide. This Workout Wednesday uses 4 bookmarks (and even more for the bonus challenge) but it's so satisfying when it comes together. This is especially useful if there's parts of your dashboard that you'd like to explain to the user and you don't feel like a tooltip is enough.

Alert on Dashboard triggers on every data refresh, how to make it trigger on change only?

We set up a simple dashboard with several card visuals, so that our key stakeholders can set up alerts, and so far we have tested this approach with one of the stakeholders.

The rules on the selected visual are very simple: if the value exceeds 1 or drops below -1, notify the stakeholder. Anything between those two values we don't care about.

We have a tri-weekly update scheduled on that report, and when the data updated on Monday an alert was sent, just as expected. The problem was that another alert then got sent on Wednesday as well, when the report updated again, even though the underlying data has not changed.

Just for some background, our data is only updated only once a month, but we can't guarantee it will always be on the same day, hence the tri-weekly update. So we want the alert to only be sent out once - when (if) the data changes and is within the scope of the alert.

So, if previous month's report resulted in -1.1, and the new one is -1.0, we would still want the alert to be sent. But we don't want the alert to be sent multiple times in the same month if the data update has already happened.

Is that possible?

Fabric warehouse SQL editor: improve Ctrl-Enter

Today the Fabric warehouse SQL editor executes the full text in the editor when you press Ctrl-Enter without anything selected.

It would be very convenient if Ctrl-enter only executed the single sql query where the cursor is positioned. This is the behavior used in DBeaver.

It is very common that you have a lot of different queries in a sql file for ad-hoc troubleshooting. Today you need to manually select a query before executing it. With this change it would be enough to simply move the cursor inside any query and press Ctrl-enter.

You are already highlighting the current query in green, so having Ctrl-enter only executing the green part would be very intuitive.

Power BI Service Refresh Fails with DataFormat. Error 10942 - Desktop Refresh Works.

Hi Everyone,

I need help troubleshooting a persistent Power BI Service refresh issue. I have spent considerable time debugging it using Copilot, AI assistance, YouTube tutorials, and community suggestions, but the issue remains unresolved.

1. Issue and Error

My Power BI report refreshes successfully in Power BI Desktop, usually within 7–15 minutes, but every refresh fails in Power BI Service.

Exact error:

DataFormat.Error: We were unable to load this Excel file because we couldn't understand its format. File contains corrupted data. Microsoft.Data.Mashup.ErrorCode = 10942.

The error appears while processing the semantic model.

2. Data Source and Dashboard Logic

Data source: SharePoint folder using SharePoint.Files() in Power Query.

SharePoint contains approximately 900 MB+ of data and hundreds of files.

Files are spread across five folders, containing Excel and CSV files.

Power Query filters files by folder path, imports Excel workbooks using Excel.Workbook(), promotes headers, changes data types, and combines files using the Combine Files / Transform Sample File mechanism.

Multiple queries depend on a common BASE SOURCE query. These queries process different datasets, including MAIN, PROFILES, LOGIN, BREAK, QC, ABANDON, and other reporting datasets.

The processed data is used in my VKYC Daily Reporting Dashboard.

3. Troubleshooting Already Done

I have already tried:

Re-authenticating SharePoint and Power BI Service data-source credentials.

Checking file extensions, file formats, column names, data types, and historical schema differences.

Standardising the historical ACHT column and newer TaskID column to TaskID.

Checking for desktop.ini and other unexpected files.

Reviewing Power Query dependencies and the Transform File / Transform Sample File helper queries.

Testing try...otherwise logic and adjusting Excel sheet navigation.

Checking queries individually. The MAIN query was the first to show an error during one Desktop debugging attempt; other queries failed because of dependencies.

Creating a separate test PBIX and rebuilding the Combine Files logic, then publishing it to Service. The test PBIX also refreshes in Desktop but fails in Service with the same error.

I have also checked the SharePoint file metadata, but I still cannot identify the exact file causing the problem.

4. Help Needed

Could someone please suggest a reliable way to:

Identify the exact Excel file causing DataFormat.Error 10942 during Power BI Service refresh?

Log the file name and folder path of files that fail when Excel.Workbook() processes them?

Diagnose why Service fails while Desktop refresh succeeds?

Test or isolate problematic files without manually opening hundreds of files or rebuilding the entire dashboard?

Use Power Query M code or another diagnostic method to capture the failing file and error details?

I would particularly appreciate a practical, step-by-step solution or sample M code that can help identify the exact failing file.

I have already tried multiple troubleshooting approaches and would really appreciate expert guidance. Thank you!
