{"id":16347,"date":"2023-03-14T12:40:08","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T17:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/provost.washu.edu\/?page_id=16347"},"modified":"2026-07-16T12:46:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T17:46:52","slug":"doctoral-council-student-representatives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/provost.washu.edu\/vpge\/phd-education-and-governance\/doctoral-council\/doctoral-council-student-representatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctoral Council: Student Representatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-washu-accordions accordion\">\n<dt class=\"accordion-header\" aria-expanded=\"\"><span class=\"accordion-header-content\">Qualifications<\/span><svg width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\"><path fill=\"#971B2F\" d=\"M5 6l5 5 5-5 2 1-7 7-7-7z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/dt><dd class=\"accordion-content \">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>To be considered for the role of graduate student representative to the Doctoral Council, a student must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be a full-time PhD student in residence for the entirety of the term, in good academic standing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be able to make the necessary time commitment for the Doctoral Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have knowledge of&nbsp;PhD&nbsp;education at WashU and broader trends nationally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be able to present a variety of opinions, have sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n\n\n\n<dt class=\"accordion-header\" aria-expanded=\"\"><span class=\"accordion-header-content\">Responsibilities<\/span><svg width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\"><path fill=\"#971B2F\" d=\"M5 6l5 5 5-5 2 1-7 7-7-7z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/dt><dd class=\"accordion-content \">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend Doctoral Council meetings throughout the term appointment (approximately two hours every month during the academic year)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in the periodic review of PhD programs at Washington University in St. Louis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain close communication with the graduate and professional student constituencies within the WashU community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain confidentiality with regard to Doctoral Council proceedings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n\n\n\n<dt class=\"accordion-header\" aria-expanded=\"\"><span class=\"accordion-header-content\">Nomination packet (required materials)<\/span><svg width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\"><path fill=\"#971B2F\" d=\"M5 6l5 5 5-5 2 1-7 7-7-7z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/dt><dd class=\"accordion-content \">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A packet including the three documents below is required for full consideration to serve on the Doctoral Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1: CV or resume<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2: Short Essay (500 words total) that addresses the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reflecting upon your life and educational experiences, including your time at WashU, and given your career aspirations, why would you be a good student representative for the Doctoral Council?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there was one aspect of doctoral education at WashU you could change, what would it be, and how would you change it?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3: Faculty or Administrator Recommendation Letter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Include the name and email address of a faculty recommender.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will be reaching out to this individual to ask for their support for you for you in this role. Please notify the recommender to expect this request. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nomination Procedure<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two nomination pathways that individuals can explore when seeking the opportunity to serve on the Doctoral Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Guidelines for Self-Nominations \u2013 A packet including the nominee\u2019s CV, a short 500-word essay, and a faculty recommendation letter is required for full consideration to serve on the Doctoral Council.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidelines for Department\/Peer Nominations \u2013 Each academic department or student groups may nominate two PhD students to serve on the Doctoral Council.&nbsp;Following a preliminary conversation with the student, the following actions should be engaged by the nominator. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem;\">Please send an email confirmation to <\/span> <a href=\"mailto:vpge@wustl.edu\">vpge@wustl.edu<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2rem;\"> identifying the student being nominated and outlining the nominee\u2019s interest in the committee.
