Apologies for looking into this so late! I took a different approach in cd6fb75af9464af8638c6e410e42c84d5164bf3a: I removed LDFLAGS (no default stripping) and changed CFLAGS from = (ignores env var) to ?= (env var overrides, same as a make command-line argument). I also removed CC and AR (Make should provide defaults) and CPPFLAGS (no point in making the defaults blank).

1) Some warnings are printed to the console: https://recoil.sourceforge.net/recoil-7.0.0-ALPHA6-macos.dmg should fix this. 2) The original palette is lost. All images are read as RGB24bit truecolor This is tracked in https://sourceforge.net/p/recoil/bugs/35/

Thank you again! I think it might be Atari STE palette (where the high bit is the least-significant) converted incorrectly. There's nothing to fix there. These files are damaged.
