OpenCL SDK Maintenance 2026
Background
The OpenCL SDK is the Khronos-maintained open source collection of OpenCL samples, utility libraries, language bindings, continuous integration (CI) infrastructure, and the OpenCL Guide. It is hosted on GitHub and maintained by the OpenCL Working Group. The goal of this project is to address identified bugs and issues in the SDK and to improve its functionality and usability.
Scope
The project should start with a short planning phase that prioritizes the work items below according to
their expected benefit. Priorities shall be agreed with the OpenCL Working Group before implementation
work starts. The contractor will then complete as many work items as possible, in the agreed priority
order, within the project budget.
Reviewing and dispositioning open pull requests, in particular:
- SDK PR 110 Added new sample to demonstrate OpenCL-Vulkan interop with ocean surface simulation
- SDK PR 124 Add Ocean OpenCL-OpenGL interop demo
Diagnosing and fixing open issues related to test failures, identifying whether these are due to problems in the SDK itself, to CI, or the implementations used for testing, such as:
- SDK Issue 104 Fix and Re-Enable Python Testing on macos
- SDK Issue 105 Fix and Re-Enable Ruby Testing on macos-latest
- SDK Issue 146 Sample Failures on macos - multidevice and callbackcpp
Completing additional work items (lower priority than 3.1 and 3.2), such as:
- Refresh and update the OpenCL Guide, for example to document use of OpenCL 3.1 and SPIR-V, direct use of OpenCL by applications such as llama.cpp, and indirect use of OpenCL through layered
- Programming models such as SYCL and chipStar.
- Process other open issues. Some will only need a polite response to the submitter; others may require changes or additions to the SDK.
- New samples, for example demonstrating command buffers.
- Other SDK ergonomic improvements.
Deliverables
All code, samples, and documentation produced under this project shall be merged into the public OpenCL SDK repository through pull requests reviewed by the OpenCL Working Group. At project close, the contractor shall provide a short report summarizing the work completed, the status of any work items not completed, and recommendations for future maintenance. Acceptance criteria: discussion, code review, and acceptance of each deliverable by the OpenCL Working Group.
