The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the nation’s trusted source for information about student achievement and learning experiences across the United States. Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP serves as a consistent and reliable measure of performance in subjects such as mathematics, reading, science, U.S. history, and civics. The results have informed education policy and practice since 1969. NAEP is required by Congress and carried out by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is led by the Commissioner of Education Statistics and part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. The National Assessment Governing Board—an independent, bipartisan board of governors, state legislators, state school superintendents, teachers, researchers, and members of the general public —sets policy for NAEP. Policymakers, educators, the assessment community, and the media use NAEP data to improve education for our nation's students. NAEP data informs education policy and practice by * reporting on trends in achievement for the nation, states, urban districts, and various student groups; * analyzing NAEP results in the context of students' educational experiences; and * providing tools and resources for the classroom and data analysis.

The NAEP civics framework was last updated in 1996. After a period of public comment, the Board voted to move forward with an update and has assembled a group of experts nationwide. Next steps here: https://lnkd.in/eYwvNGhy
The recent PISA results have renewed conversations about how technology is being used in classrooms and what role it plays in student learning. Our #NAEP survey questionnaire data can help provide additional context, including state-level information on students' educational experiences. For example, in 2024, 26% of 8th-graders in public schools reported that their teachers required them to use computers or other digital devices for math assignments all or almost all of the time, up from 15% in 2019. Looking beyond the average, technology use varied across states and jurisdictions. The percentage of 8th-graders reporting being required to use digital devices for math assignments all or almost all of the time ranged from 13% in Puerto Rico to 36% in Virginia.
