Mather Hospital’s New Graduate Nurse Transition to Practice program – also known as a nurse residency program – has been reaccredited with distinction for four years by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Mather’s nurse residency program, which became the first to be accredited in New York State in 2018, helps new nurses develop more skills, competency and confidence through a year-long curriculum. Mather’s program is one of only 201 ANCC accredited nurse residency programs worldwide.
“Mather is committed to the community we serve by providing the highest quality of service and care,” said Chief Nursing Officer/Vice President for Nursing Marie Mulligan, PhD, RN. “Educating our current and future health care professionals is a priority in ensuring our commitment to the community and our staff. The nurse residency program provides nursing education, evidence-based practice and peer support.
“The program has successfully demonstrated an increase in registered nurse recruitment, retention rates and performance outcomes. We are extremely proud and honored to receive redesignation of the new graduate nurse transition to practice accreditation with distinction.”
Nursing research studies have shown that nurse residency programs increase the retention and satisfaction of new graduate nurses. Lower turnover rates of graduate nurses equate to better patient care. The program aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, supporting the new graduate nurses in patient care.

New Graduate Nurse Transition to Practice at Mather Hospital is recognized by the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program® (PTAP) as an Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs (IRAP).
