Three Mather employees have been recognized for going above and beyond their job duties in the Voyage to Excellence annual Top of the WAVE awards, which is facilitated by the Employee Engagement Team.

Ivelisse “Ivette” Batista of Environmental Services was named the 2020 Top of the WAVE Grand Prize winner. Early in July 2020, Ivette saw a patient who was mistakenly dropped off at our Thrift Shop who was trying to get to the Emergency Room. The patient had already fallen a few times and Ivette rushed to his side and remained with the patient until another colleague, Helen Scully from Food & Nutritional Services arrived to help escort the patient to the Emergency Room for COVID testing. Helen had been on break and arrived without her mask on so Ivette ran to the Hospital lobby and brought back a mask for Helen. Since Helen was assisting the patient, Ivette took it upon herself to physically put the mask on Helen to protect her! Ivette showed true compassion and concern for both her colleague and for a patient. For her kindness, quick thinking and rapid response time, Ivette will be awarded an Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality system.

Patricia ByrnePatricia Byrne, RN, 3 South, is the Top of the WAVE Second Prize winner. In late October of 2020, a patient was admitted to our 3 South unit. The patient was noted to have been emotionally fragile, and she only allowed herself to trust certain staff members. This patient had little to nothing to her name and repeatedly told staff that she felt ‘naked’ because she did not own any clothing. Pat went above and beyond for this patient not only at her bedside, but by purchasing clothing out of her own pocket to give to the patient upon discharge. This action went a long way in helping the patient feel safe and establish trust, both during her stay and after discharge. For her exceptional compassion, Pat will be awarded a Samsung Galaxy Tablet A7.

Nicole Zarcone, OT, occupational therapist, received a third place Top of the WAVE award. Early in the pandemic in March of 2020, Nicole assisted a patient who was lonely due to the visitor suspension and depressed from not being able to keep in contact with his family. Nicole took the time to assist this patient by downloading Facebook Messenger onto his cell phone and teaching him how to use the app. This allowed the patient to keep in contact with his beloved family and helped combat his loneliness during extremely uncertain times. For her caring and compassion for our patients, Nicole was awarded a Chefman 10L Multifunction Digital Air Fryer.
