The University of California, San Diego is ranked among the nation’s top 50 “Best Value” public colleges for 2010 by The Princeton Review, one of America’s most widely known education service companies. Biologists have developed an efficient way to genetically modify human embryonic stem cells. Their approach, which uses bacterial artificial chromosomes to swap in defective copies of genes, will make possible the rapid development of stem cell lines that can both serve as models for human genetic diseases and as testbeds on which to screen potential treatments.
The University of California, San Diego is ranked the ‘best value’ in California, according to the list of 100 best values in public colleges and universities that will appear in the February 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.
One in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Nearly 30,000 men in the US die from this cancer ever year. African American men have nearly twice the risk of dying from prostate cancer as all other ethnicities. Michael Haynes, NFL Hall of Famer, points to a lack of education as the reason why many men avoid screening, risking a cancer diagnosis late in the game. As a spokesperson for the American Urological Association, Haynes and his surgeon, Christopher Kane, MD, chief of urology at UC San Diego Medical Center, offer a playbook of four strategies for men’s urologic health.
A team of researchers in California and Massachusetts has developed a “cocktail” of different nanometer-sized particles that work in concert within the bloodstream to locate, adhere to and kill cancerous tumors.
Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder but also in the relationship of the eyes and mouth of the beholden. The distance between a woman’s eyes and the distance between her eyes and her mouth are key factors in determining how attractive she is to others, according to new psychology research from the University of California, San Diego and the University of Toronto.
U.S. households consumed approximately 3.6 zettabytes of information in 2008, according to the “How Much Information? 2009 Report on American Consumers,” released today by the University of California, San Diego. One zettabyte is 1,000,000,000 trillion bytes, and total bytes consumed last year were the equivalent of the information in thick paperback novels stacked seven feet high over the entire United States, including Alaska.
Students at one of the nation’s greenest universities won’t have to go far to get involved in the green revolution. On Nov. 20 UC San Diego will unveil the Sustainability Resource Center, a one-stop-sustainability-shop where students can learn about green jobs and courses on sustainability-related topics, how to conserve energy and water or find eco-friendly products.
