Categories: Deals, News, TV Biz, Television

CBS confirmed that it has picked up Chaos, a drama from executive producers Brett Ratner (Prison Break) and Tom Spezialy (Desperate Housewives) about a ragtag group of CIA operatives tripped up by backstabbing and beaucratic snafus. The drama stars Freddy Rodriguez (Grindhouse) and Eric Close (Without a Trace).

This latest pickup brings CBS’ drama order to five for the 2010-11 season: Hawaii 5-0, as well as Defenders and Blue Bloods, will bow this fall while the Forest Whitaker starrer Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior will premiere later in the year.

Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Leah Remini and others co-host new CBS talk show

Categories: News, TV Biz, Television

CBS has announced it has ordered a new daytime talk show co-hosted by Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini, and Marissa Jaret Winokur for the upcoming fall season. The format of the show will resemble The View, with the co-hosts discussing various current events but from a motherhood point of view,  CBS says. All of the hosts have children who range in age from infants to adults.

The talk show — which is replacing the outgoing sudser As the World Turns — will also feature interviews with big-name entertainers and newsmakers.  As well as serving as co-host, Gilbert will act as executive producer.

“Daytime is an evolving daypart with more variety now among soap operas, game and talk shows,” said Barbara Bloom, CBS’ Senior Vice President of Daytime, said in a statement.  “We were looking for a new format that would speak to the core audience but also have the topical and entertainment value to go even broader.  This panel is not a bashful bunch; they are outspoken on any issue you put on the table.  It promises to be an hour of television with timely discussions, unfiltered opinions and a lot of personality.”

There was early speculation that CBS would replace As the World Turns with a CBS/Paramount-produced talk show hosted by Valerie Bertinelli, but the network opted to develop the aforementioned panel series and game shows instead. In fact, CBS considered remakes of Pyramid and Password since it replaced The Guiding Light with an update of Let’s Make a Deal.

This isn’t the first time that someone tried to make a mom version of The View. Telepictures developed a pilot featuring Kate Gosselin and Food Network star Paula Deen last year, but the project was scuttled.

Meanwhile, the final episode of As the World Turns is set to air in September.

It seems Daniel Craig is still in talks to star as Mikael Blomkvist, but no deal has yet been struck, and it’s unclear whether scheduling hurdles with Cowboys & Aliens and another Bond feature are holding up the deal.

As for the role of Lisbeth Salander — the part Sony chairman Amy Pascal calls “the role every actress in the world wants” — Deadline Hollywood reports that in addition to the commonly talked-about Ellen Page (Inception), Carey Mulligan (An Education), and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), the list of candidates includes a group of more obscure actresses that could be breaking out in the next 12 months due to the high profile projects on the horizon.

Included on that list is Rooney Mara (pictured, back row, second from left), who will be seen next in Fincher’s The Social Network. (Read full post)

george-clooneyImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/Filmmagic.comThe Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today that it honor George Clooney with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at this year’s Emmys. The award will be presented for the first time in six years to Clooney on Aug. 29 during the live presentation on NBC.

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award goes to someone whose humanitarian work has brought credit to the industry and has had a lasting impact on society. Other recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, and Danny Thomas. Clooney remains committed to increasing awareness of human rights issues around the globe, from his mission to stop genocide in Darfur, to his efforts to quickly mobilize the entertainment industry for the America: A Tribute to Heroes in the wake of 9/11. Most recently, he put together the Hope For Haiti Now telethon.

“George was an obvious choice for this honor,” said John Shaffner, the TV Academy’s Chairman and CEO, in a statement. “He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to action on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need as well those tragically oppressed in Darfur.”

'Salt' premiere: Angelina Jolie talks about playing the action hero

Categories: Movie Biz

Angelina Jolie was her usual stunning self Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere of Salt. She spent a few minutes with EW reporter Carrie Bell chatting about action roles, the possibility of playing Cleopatra, and bringing the kids to the set. Excerpts are below.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You play badass so well.
ANGELINA JOLIE:
Oh thanks. I’m glad because I love it. I love to jump around and break things. If the actor’s having a good time, the audience feels it and you have a good time together. I love the pace. I’m very impatient so I just kept going. I never stop moving so this was perfect for me. We were never in the same place for very long.

Do you expect to slow down anytime soon?
Not as long as I can still do it and people want to see it.

People are comparing Evelyn Salt more to Jason Bourne than to Lara Croft. What do you think?
I would say that’s accurate, because Lara Croft is based in fantasy and Jason Bourne and Evelyn Salt are based in reality. But I think she is her own. She is not just a female Jason Bourne. We worked very, very hard to make sure we weren’t copying anything that had been done before and not just doing the girl version of what the boys do. But actually finding our own language and our own new person. (Read full post)

Comic Con 2010: Fox has a poster tube for you!

Grabbing some good swag is (almost) as important as snagging a choice spot inside the Marvel and JJ Abrams/Joss Whedon panels at this week’s Comic Con. Fortunately, 20th Century Fox TV is happy to oblige: It plans to distribute tens of thousands of poster tubes from its booth over the convention’s four-day span in San Diego. The studio will also distribute thousands of mini posters for each of its shows, some of which were created exclusively for Comic Con.

The TV studio has scheduled panel discussions for 10 of its shows at Comic Con: Glee, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bones, The Cleveland Show, Futurama, American Dad, Sons of Anarchy, Bob’s Burgers, and Neighbors From Hell.

Janis Joplin biopic: Will the Amy Adams version really make it to the big screen?

Categories: Casting, Deals, Movie Biz, News

Amy Adams’ reps have confirmed that the 35-year-old actress will portray Janis Joplin in the biopic to be directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and produced by Temple Hill Entertainment. Whether or not this movie actually makes it to the big screen is another matter entirely. Meirelles may be co-writing the most recent draft of the script, but he is set to direct 360 — a BBC Films project written by Peter Morgan — prior to beginning work on Joplin. Also, the film does not yet have a studio partner, though a source says Temple Hill is talking to Fox Searchlight about the film. Until a deal is reached though, financing on the project remains shaky. Temple Hill didn’t return calls seeking comment. But the producers, who are also behind The Twilight Saga, are not the first to try to bring Joplin to the big screen. (Read full post)
