The Missouri Assessment Program-Alternate (MAP-A) is administered to students who are determined to qualify by the district Individual Education Program (IEP) team, using the DESE eligibility criteria. No student may be tested outside of the assigned grade level. Missouri uses the Instructionally Embedded assessment model for ELA and math; and the Year End assessment model for science. 

If the MAP-A assessment is given to over one percent of the total tested population, the district may be asked to provide justification for exceeding the 1% participation cap for Special Education Compliance monitoring purposes.

The MAP-A achievement standards are aligned with Missouri's Learning Standards, and students who take the MAP-A do not participate in Grade-Level or End-of-Course assessments.

The MAP-A is administered by educators in three content areas:

• English language arts in grades 3-8 and 11
• Mathematics in grades 3-8 and 11
• Science in grades 5, 8, and 11

NOTE: Districts may wish to also administer ELA and Math assessments to students in non-required grades: 9 and 10; and Science assessments in grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 for local assessment use. Grade 12 students are not required to be enrolled in Educator Portal. Please refer to Form E.

The MAP alternate assessment offers an innovative way for students with significant cognitive disabilities to demonstrate learning throughout the school year by integrating assessment with instruction throughout the year in a pattern of instruct, then assess. MAP-A aligns student learning with Missouri Learning Standards in English language arts, mathematics, and science.

MAP-A is accessible by students with significant cognitive disabilities, including those who have hearing/visual disabilities, and/or neuromuscular or orthopedic motor disabilities. Assessments allow for the use of common assistive technologies using tablets, keyboards with a mouse, and touch-screens.
