Drag and drop the file occurs crash

  • What is your operating system?

Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS

  • What is your Shotcut version (see Help > About Shotcut)?

$ snap list shotcut
Name Version Rev Tracking Publisher Notes
shotcut 26.10.3 2371 latest/stable meltytech✓ classic
  • Can you repeat the problem? If so, what are the steps?

Open Shotcut, drag and drop my file to the timeline. You will see “Convert to Edit-friendly…”, click Cancel or ok: in both cases the Shotcut will crash without any msg.

But there is no problem on the Ubuntu 25.04

a@asya:~$ shotcut --version
Shotcut 25.03.15
a@asya:~$ dpkg -l shotcut

I don’t know exactly what’s happening, but the program closes when I try to open certain types of .mp4 files.
Sometimes it closes and reopens a blank project; other times, it just shuts down completely.
Linux Mint here.

It wasn’t happening before the last update.

I am looking into it here

If you are using GPU processing and hardware decoding, this is a bug that was recently fixed.

Does the problem go away if you turn off Settings > Preview Scaling > Use Hardware?

Does the problem go away if you click “Do not show this anymore.” on the convert dialog?

Does it work fine if you do not drag to the timeline? Use File > Open or drag it to the Source player first.

  1. No. It was turned off since scratch.

  2. No.

Yes, File > Open works well. And then from the preview video I can drag and drop to the timeline!

So, it is somehow related to the convert dialog opening. If you still want to drag from a file manager, try dropping to player or playlist first until the bug is fixed.
