Failed to save the web story error

We are intermittently unable to save drafts or publish Web Stories. Clicking Save draft or Publish shows: “Failed to save the story: The response is not a valid JSON response.”

The request to update/publish or save the story as a draft is intermittently failing with a 404 Not Found (Nginx) error. Out of multiple identical requests, some are successful while others fail.

Upon investigation, we found no difference in the headers or payload between the successful and failing requests.

It looks like the image did not upload properly. Can you upload on https://imgur.com/ or similar perhaps?
If your server responds with 404 headers you might want to reach out to your hosting provider.

It would be useful to see the full URL that was request, as well as the headers and payload.

I really recommend reaching out to your hosting provider though. There might be a server configuration or firewall issue.

The URL looks correct.

Your screenshot shows a 404 error coming from the nginx web server, so the request was not even hitting WordPress or the Web Stories plugin. It failed before that. That means there’s clearly something going on with your web server or firewall. I strongly recommend reaching out to your hosting provider to investigate this, check server logs, etc.
