Some Reflections on the Platonic Principle of Participation in St Thomas Aquinas

Abstract: SUMMARY The article deals with the main " Platonic " theme in Aquinas – the notion of participation which plays the crucial role in establishing the ontological unity of his worldview, known as " participational metaphysics ". A brief historical survey of some 20 th century Thomistic investigations of the field presents the classifications, made by C. Fabro and L-B. Geiger, and shows the importance of liberating the doctrine of the primacy of esse from essentialist suppositions. The article analyzes some texts by Thomas Aquinas from his Summa contra gentiles, Prima pars of Summa theologiae, The Commentary on Liber de causis, and The Exposition of De hebdomadibus dealing with the problem of causality, the conception of a thing as a composition, and the Platonic aspects of the Thomistic doctrine of creation.

“Knowledge of Being in Thomas Aquinas” (Thomistic Studies, Washington D.C., USA, 2009)

Abstract: Aquinas holds that ens in quantum ens or ens commune is the subject of metaphysics. Now, how does he account for our discovery of this subject? It seems a necessary that we first give an account of the way we arrive at knowledge of being as real or existing, because knowledge of ens concerns the conditions of possibility for metaphysics. In this paper, I will present Cornelio Fabro’s treatment of the problem, which he centers around the “original synthetic apprehension of ens,” as he termed it. He claims that according to Thomas Aquinas, ens is the absolutely first object of the intellect, since it is grasped by the intellect’s first operation: “That which the intellect first conceives as the most evident, and to which it reduces all its concepts, is being (ens).” In order to offer a concise presentation of the topic, I will first present some texts in which Thomas mentions the two operations of the intellect, and Fabro’s interpretation of the text, in which he reconciles the priority of ens and the two operations of the mind. Second, I will turn to Fabro’s explanation regarding the apprehension of ens and esse, with a presentation of some of Thomas’s texts that according to Fabro shed light on the topic.

Review of Rudi A. Te Velde, Participation and Substantiality in Thomas Aquinas

Abstract: This splendid book is about St Thomas's metaphysical account of creation. The title refers to its dominant theme, which is how the account succeeds in resolving apparent tensions between the notions of participation and substantiality as elements of fundamental ontology. A fascinating theme in itself, Dr. te Velde has also found the heuristic value of it. For all the progress that has been made over this century in recovering Thomas's metaphysics, his inquiry brings to light serious problems for prevalent interpretations of the doctrines of participation in being, creative causality, and the relation between being and essence. With a clarity of exposition that is simply extraordinary, in my judgment it also goes far toward resolving the issues.
