Teacher quality is one of the most important in-school factors for student achievement. Yet, across the heartland, teacher preparation programs are not keeping up with school-district demand—leaving school districts without enough highly-trained teachers to fill their classrooms. To address this gap and strengthen teacher pipelines across the heartland, Heartland Forward partnered with Education First Consulting to launch the Heartland Educator Workforce Community of Practice—a cross-state collaborative bringing together state education leaders from Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma with the goal of ensuring every teacher entering the classroom is well-prepared and well-supported. Focusing on three critical areas of the educator pipeline—training, mentoring and retention—the Community of Practice’s first year offers a replicable model for strengthening teacher workforce pipelines across the country and proof of what is possible when state leaders have the opportunity to turn collaboration into action.
