“I’m just a perfectionist.” We often say it almost like it’s a strength. And sometimes, high standards absolutely are. But there’s another side to perfectionism that we don’t talk about enough. Sometimes we keep improving, checking and preparing because finishing means exposing ourselves to judgement. If it’s never quite ready, nobody can reject it. Nobody can criticise it. And we never have to find out whether it was actually good enough. The irony? Perfectionism can look like confidence from the outside while being driven by self-doubt underneath. So next time you find yourself making “just one more change,” ask: Am I genuinely improving this — or am I avoiding the discomfort of putting it out there? Sometimes 90% and done will take you much further than 100% and still waiting. And what helps someone become more comfortable with “good enough” when their instinct is to keep perfecting?

Sometimes the extra edit isn’t improving the work; it’s protecting us from the discomfort of putting it out there. Recognising the difference can change everything.
