ChatGPT and Gemini monthly app downloads U.S. 2023-2026

In September 2026, ChatGPT’s mobile app registered beyond *** million downloads in both the iOS and Google Play App Stores in the United States, compared to Google Gemini's *** million. Both AI apps noticed considerable dip in download volume between June and July 2026, resulting from changes in market usage and the rise of rival apps. 

The name for AI-powered search

Released in November 2022 and available as an app since April 2023, ChatGPT took only five days to reach more than a million users and become the fastest internet service to reach this milestone. Initially launched by OpenAI as a mobile app on iOS for the United States market, it registered nearly **** million downloads already during its first month on the Apple App Store. It was then eventually made available in other markets. By June 2023, it generated almost *** million downloads, reaching another *** million downloads in August 2023, as the app was launched on Android. 

How the AI search race started

Setting new standards for the global online search market, the release of ChatGPT caught companies like Google and Microsoft by surprise. Google quickly rushed to offer an alternative AI assistant, Bard, now rebranded as Gemini, after the company’s large language model (LLM) system. Microsoft, meanwhile, quickly sided with OpenAI’s assistant by integrating it into several of its Bing search engine’s services and applications. Despite roughly two years after its release, the impact of search chatbots is already visible on Google Search's search market share on desktop, which registered some of its lowest rates for these devices in over a decade.
