Mather Hospital’s Choosing Wisely Committee was honored by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as an ASCP 2021 Choosing Wisely Champion for its successful efforts to drive effective test utilization and reduce waste in health care.

Established in 2016, the Choosing Wisely Committee reviews evidence-based guidelines to stimulate discussion about frequently ordered tests or treatments, and to develop tools to ensure clinicians make more effective care choices to improve quality and patient outcomes.

“The Choosing Wisely quality initiative is improving patient care by helping clinicians and patients make smart decisions about their care using science-based practice guidelines to avoid unnecessary diagnostic tests, treatments and procedures,” said Denise Geiger, PhD, DLM (ASCP), Mather Hospital’s Clinical Transformation Liaison and Clinical Chemist, Medical Affairs. “We are being recognized and honored with the ASCP Choosing Wisely Award because of the talents, collaboration and support of all of our hard-working committee team members.”

The Choosing Wisely Champions program is part of ASCP’s broader Choosing Wisely campaign, an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation, which seeks to advance a national dialogue on avoiding unnecessary medical tests, treatments and procedures. The program recognizes the efforts of dedicated pathologists and laboratory professionals for making informed decisions about lab testing. Choosing Wisely recommendations improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs, and the Choosing Wisely Champions encourage their colleagues to use the right test at the right time for the right cost.

Founded in 1922 in Chicago, ASCP is the world’s largest professional membership organization for pathologists and laboratory professionals.
