Get to know Dr. Nwaiser:

Q: What made you choose your career path?

A: I chose sleep medicine after listening to the TED Talk, “Sleep Is Your Superpower” by Matthew Walker. This was played at a grand round conference during my intern year when I was just beginning to think about which specialty I would ultimately pursue. I found the function of sleep to be fascinating and realized how underappreciated the importance of sleep was. I wanted to be a part of the medical community that helps bring awareness to its significance.

Q: What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?

A: The best professional advice I have ever received was “that time is going to pass anyway.” This motivated me to keep pursuing my career, no matter how long it was going to take.

Q: If you could go back in time 10 years and tell yourself something, what would you say?

A: It would be to be present in every moment of every day because the days go by fast, and the years go by even quicker.

Q: How do you like to start your day?

A: I like to start most of my days with a cup of coffee and an episode of whatever show I am currently in the middle of (usually Grey’s Anatomy). Then usually a quick workout.

Q: What person or book has had the biggest impact on you and why?

A: A book that has recently impacted me in a big way is “Think Like a Monk” by Jay Shetty. In a world that is so stimulating and where so many outside factors affect our lives, this book helps keep me stay true to myself and focused on the life I have always envisioned in the most positive and selfless way.
