Independent Reading Time: Protecting Quiet Time with Books

I have to admit, committing myself to reading a non fiction was harder than I anticipated. 😄 But it was all worth it. More shelved books will see the light of the day soon, but for now, here's my takeaway from the most recent read. :) 🗓️ tip: Goodreads is best to keep a digital log of your reading activity.

Today I went through my computer, looked at manuscripts for books and stories, and was amazed at how many I'd forgotten about. One of the books is Anyone Can Read: A Step-by-Step Guide to Teaching Reading. At only 9,200 words, it's too short to be published. If you'd like a free copy, I'm happy to email it to you. When reading books to your children, don’t skip over explaining who the authors and illustrators are and what that means!!! It helps them understand that books are created by other human beings, not mystical creatures. It may also inspire them to write/draw their own stories!

A hard page is not the end of a reader. It is the moment some children close the book and decide they are not the kind of person who finishes. Teachers see the recovery move every day: a child who stays with the same book after the page that slowed them down. That choice is agency. It is also practice. The story has to be worth returning to, or accuracy work has nowhere to land. Books will always matter. Protecting the reason to open the next page is part of teaching reading.
