    Wars don’t just destroy nations. They expose how fragile our systems really are. Over the past few years, every global disruption, from conflicts to pandemics to supply shocks, has shown us one thing clearly: We have built a world that is highly efficient… but dangerously dependent. - Food travels thousands of kilometres before it reaches our plates. - Energy systems rely on distant, unstable sources. - Waste is exported, outsourced, and forgotten. And the moment something breaks somewhere in the world, everyone, everywhere, feels it. Maybe the question isn’t: How do we make global systems stronger? Maybe the question is: Why are we so dependent on them in the first place? And what if our cities, towns and villages could: • Grow more of their own food • Generate more of their own energy • Manage their own waste • Create and consume locally This isn’t about isolation. It’s about resilience. Because when systems are decentralised: • Communities recover faster • Livelihoods are created locally • Environmental impact reduces • And people regain a sense of ownership This is where sustainability meets survival. Decentralised production systems are not just a climate solution. They are a risk mitigation strategy for an uncertain world. The future isn’t global vs local. It’s global and local. In fact, its hyperlocal. But the balance has clearly tipped too far. If there’s one lesson from the world we’re witnessing today, it’s this: The strongest communities are the least dependent ones. Time to build local. Time to act resilient. Time to rethink how we produce, consume, and live.     Every person should have one folder in their computer that is the "In Case of Death" folder... and this is how it is structured... The folder is used to manage and pass on one's assets to successors easily... and to avoid any legal hassles. This folder is divided into 5 parts: 1/ Personal IDs - Birth Certificate - Marriage Certificate - Aadhaar and Passport - Divorce Decrees - Change of Name Affidavits 2/ Legal & Estate Management Documents - Last Registered Will with notarized copy - Succession Certificates for Movable Assets - Guardianship Documents for minor children / dependants 3/ Financial Assets and Accounts - Bank Account details and statements - Demat Account, Shares, Mutual Funds, Investment Portfolio - Insurance Policy Documents with Beneficiaries - Outstanding loan documents - Bank Locker or Safe Deposit Locations and Access details 4/ Property Documentation - Real Estate and Business - Property Deeds and Titles for Real Estate - Mortgage Documents - Rental Agreements - Business Ownership Documents and Succession Plan 5/ Digital Assets and Access Information - Email with recovery information - Social media contact and legacy contact preferences - Domain names, Cloud Storage - Digital Subscriptions of material value The best way to manage passwords here is to provide access to Password Managers where you can add an Emergency Contact who can access all passwords in case of such conditions. There are apps like 1Password, NordPass and Keeper which offer printable PDF documents for emergency access that can be kept in this folder. These apps allow a waiting period from last activity after which the emergency contacts can use the data. Also, please ensure that you submit all such documents for probate and get them drafted by a trusted lawyer. I would also hope you would tell trusted family members about where you have stored this information so that they can access it when required.     There are always situations in which you need to communicate fast and clearly. Especially in a crisis, in new situations, or when there is time pressure. The STICC protocol helps you achieve this. The STICC Protocol was developed by psychologist Gary Klein as a tool for managing the unexpected. STICC stands for: Situation, Task, Intent, Concerns, Calibrate and is a technique for productive communication about what to do when you face a new, unexpected situation. This is what it means: S - Situation = Here’s what I think we face. The leader summarizes how they see the situation, problem, or crisis at hand. T - Task = Here’s what I think we should do. The leader explains their plan for addressing the situation, problem, or crisis at hand. I - Intent = Here’s why I think this is what we should do. The leader explains the reasons why they think this is the best way of addressing the situation, problem, or crisis at hand. C - Concerns = Here’s what we should keep our eyes on. The leader mentions possible downsides or future consequences of the solution suggested to be taken into account as well. C - Calibrate = Now talk to me and give me your views. The leader asks others in the team to give their feedback and viewpoints, and especially invites them to disagree and add. This technique helps you in managing pressured situations in three ways: First, once something unexpected happens, it helps to develop appropriate responses. The five steps are aimed at discussing with a team what to do in cases that are not familiar. Through its focus on concrete action, on gathering different viewpoints, and on speed, the STICC protocol is a quick way to take appropriate action in new situations. Second, in step 4 (Concerns), you open up the discussion for further uncertainties and other changes that may follow. In this way, you mentally prepare people that there will always remain uncertainties. This helps in developing a crisis-ready mindset that is not only helpful in the current crisis, but also in the next. Third, the fact that a constructive dialogue takes place also facilitates communication and mutual learning. Even though the leader brings the suggestions here, it is the team together that comes to a solution. And while doing that, they learn together and from each other in an open and adaptive way, which helps further prepare them for future crises.     🚨 Designing For Stress and Emergency. Practical guidelines on how to design time-critical products to prevent errors and drive accuracy ↓ 🚫 People can’t multi-task, especially in very stressful situations. 🤔 Stress disrupts attention, memory, cognition, decision-making. 🤔 Also, it's difficult to prioritize and draw logical conclusions. ✅ In stress, we rely on fast, intuitive judgments — not reasoning. ✅ It leads to instinctive responses based on established habits. ✅ Goal: design flows that support focus and high accuracy. ✅ Start with better default settings, values, presets, actions. ✅ High-priority first: order of actions and buttons matters. ✅ Break complex tasks in a series of simple steps (10s each). ✅ Add built-in safeguards to prevent irreversible errors (Undo). ✅ Shift users to single-tasking: ask for one thing at a time. ✅ More simpler pages might work better than 1 complex page. ✅ Suggest a step-by-step plan of action to follow along. ✅ Design and test flows for emergency response ahead of time. 🚨 Add emergency mode for instant alerts, task assignments. In times of stress and high pressure, some people make decisions hastily, while others get entirely paralyzed. Either way is a likely path to mistakes — often irreversible ones, and often without time for extensive deliberations. Ideally, these decisions would be made way ahead of time — and reused when needed. The critical job that designers must do well is to help people focus. And that means removing distractions first — non-critical notifications and navigation. Asking simple questions and prompting simple actions — one thing at a time. Alert colleagues to get involved with a single button. Initiate an emergency mode with a pre-made chain of actions. Most importantly, set up an annual day to stress test your product and refine emergency responses. To check if fallbacks work as expected. If people know the protocols to follow. And if current UX of the product helps people manage failures and exceptional situations well enough. Emergencies will happen eventually — it’s just a matter of time. With good design, we can help mitigate risk and control damage, and make it hard to make irreversible mistakes. At its heart, that’s what good UX is exceptionally good at.     🇸🇪 How can one measure the “spirit of resistance” of a nation in the face of foreign threats? As many nations try to do so, a valuable 254-page doc by the Swedish psychological defence agency & Lund University Myndigheten för psykologiskt försvar 📖 Psychological Defence & Information Influence 🔹 core argument = democratic resilience is not primarily about countering lies but about protecting the social, cognitive and normative conditions that make democracy function 🔹 moves away from a narrow focus on “disinformation” and adopts a broader information influence framework 👉🏼 Trust as the central currency of democratic resilience (institutions, media, fellow citizens) 🔹 media systems = strategic infrastructure 🔹 professional journalism, public service media and media literacy as first-line defences 🛡️✊🏻 Citizen resilience and the “spirit of resistance”: citizens are treated as the foundation of defence. Citizen resilience : 3️⃣ components: 🔹 resources (education, skills, material security) 🔹 engagement (sense of duty, trust, responsibility) 🔹 networks (formal / informal social ties) The concept of “spirit of resistance” is explicitly separated from simple “willingness to defend”: 🔹 surveys showing high willingness to fight largely measure support for defence policy, not behaviour 🔹 declarative answers suffer from social desirability and norm signalling 🔹 what matters is whether citizens: 🔹 accept defence-related civic norms 🔹 believe others comply with them 🔹 believe they themselves will comply under pressure ⚠️ major knowledge gap: democratic societies still lack robust tools to measure real behavioural readiness and norm compliance in crisis conditions. 🇺🇦 Lessons from Ukraine: adaptive psychological defence under pressure 🔹 resilience was built before full-scale war, not after 🔹 civil society actors played a decisive role in information defence 🔹 information control in wartime can be decisive: banning hostile TV channels / platforms reduced adversary reach — controversial, but operationally effective 🔹 speed, adaptability and emotional resonance consistently outperformed “perfect messaging” These measures are not prescribed for peacetime democracies. 🔹 key = context, proportionality and legal preparedness Effective psychological defence relies on: 🔹 long-term education and media literacy 🔹 crisis communication capacity 🔹 coordination across public institutions 🔹 cooperation with civil society and media 🔹 attribution and exposure of hostile actors 🔹 ethical reflection and democratic accountability 👉🏼 Deterrence in the information environment is considered limited but possible — primarily through attribution, resilience and denial of impact rather than retaliation. ➡️Psychological defence is not about controlling information.     Monday Safety Check #11 🌪️ The site was empty. The crane still fell. Last Thursday in Coquimbo, Chile, a tower crane came down during a violent windstorm — buckling onto a half-built structure before its boom crashed across a row of homes. According to local reports, at least four to six houses were damaged, vehicles were crushed, and one person suffered minor injuries. Remarkably, nobody died. The storm system sweeping the region brought gusts of up to 107 km/h (66 mph) and left hundreds of thousands without power. Here’s what this incident teaches us: safety doesn’t end when work stops. A construction site during a storm, a holiday shutdown, or a weekend is still a site. The loads don’t disappear. The wind doesn’t check the work schedule. And in a city, the fall radius of a tower crane doesn’t stop at the fence line — it reaches streets, cars, and people’s living rooms. What securing a site for severe weather actually means: → Tower cranes must be left in weathervane mode — slew brake released so the jib can rotate freely and align with the wind instead of fighting it → Every crane has a manufacturer’s out-of-service wind limit. Forecast approaching it? The decision point is before the storm, not during → Loose materials, formwork panels, fencing, scaffolding sheeting — all of it becomes projectiles at 100 km/h → Someone must own the shutdown checklist. Not “somebody.” A name. The investigation will determine what happened here. But the pattern is familiar worldwide: sites are secured for the workday and forgotten for the storm. A crane that stands through years of lifting can fall in one unmanned afternoon.     If EMAS Saves Lives, Why Don’t We Have It Everywhere? 🤔 Runway overruns are terrifying. Planes skidding off the end, with passengers’ lives hanging in the balance. Yet, Engineered Materials Arresting Systems (EMAS) have proven they can prevent these accidents—so why aren’t they mandatory everywhere? 🔍 How EMAS Works: Made of lightweight, crushable materials, EMAS absorbs an aircraft's kinetic energy to bring it to a safe stop. Imagine riding your bike at high speed into loose gravel—sudden resistance slows you down quickly. 🛡️ The Proven Track Record: In 2016, an American Airlines 737 overran a wet runway in New York. EMAS saved everyone on board by stopping the aircraft just 79 meters short of disaster. FAA reports over 15 incidents where EMAS prevented runway overruns—proof that it works. 🚨 But Here’s the Catch: Only a fraction of airports have EMAS due to cost and space constraints. This raises the uncomfortable question: What’s the price of safety? If technology exists to prevent disasters, can we justify not installing it everywhere? Johnston on May 18, 1980, right before the lateral blast of Mount St. Helens removed the top 1,300 feet of the mountain in seconds. Do you remember? In 1980, monitoring required physical proximity, manual seismic readings, and real-time visual observations over radio frequencies. Tragically, traditional models struggled to predict the unprecedented side-slope failure that triggered the catastrophic eruption. Fast forward to today, and Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally changing how we forecast the unpredictable: 🌋 Multi-Modal Data Fusion: Instead of relying on isolated seismographs, AI systems ingest streams of satellite radar, thermal imaging, gas emission data, and micro-seismic activity simultaneously. 🛰️ Pattern Recognition Across History: Machine learning models are trained on eruption patterns globally. A seismic signature in an unmonitored region can now be matched instantly against decades of historical data from thousands of miles away. ⚡ Real-Time Anomaly Detection: Deep learning algorithms (like isolation forests) scan continuous satellite streams in near-real-time to detect subtle thermal spikes or ground deformation weeks before a physical event occurs. 🎯 Bridging the Data Gap: Through transfer learning, AI allows scientists to extend accurate forecasting models to remote, under-monitored regions where millions of lives are at risk. Technology isn't just giving us faster notifications; it’s shifting disaster management from reactive survival to predictive mitigation.     Offshore Training: Preparing for the Worst to Protect the Best Working offshore means operating in an environment where the margin for error is razor-thin. That’s why realistic, high-intensity training is not just a requirement — it’s a responsibility. Some of the critical safety modules, including: 🚁 Helicopter Ditching Scenarios – Simulated crash landings, underwater escape procedures, and survival techniques in extreme conditions. 🛟 Abandon Ship Drills – Rapid decision-making, teamwork, and mastering evacuation procedures to ensure every second counts. 🌊 Survival at Sea – Understanding the ocean’s unpredictability and preparing both mentally and physically for the unexpected. Training like this is tough, intense, and yes — sometimes scary. But it builds confidence, competence, and the ability to stay calm when others can’t. In our industry, preparation saves lives.
